What Is A Centrifugal Cleaner!

One of the features that is responsible for the long life of the Scania engines used in the Moxy articulated dump trucks is the centrigual cleaner for the oil. The unit takes the place of the 'spin on' oil filters most engines use.

The principal is that the oil enters the cleaner and leaves through the small nozzles at the bottom of rotor bowl. Because the oil is under pressure as it leaves through the small nozzles it causes the rotor to spin at speeds up to 8,500 RPM. When the engine is turned OFF the rotor continues to spin. It is very audible and it is a good sound! If you don't hear it, that is bad! The incoming oil is 'slung' against the sides of the rotor. The dirt particles as small as four (4) microns stick to the wall of the rotor bowl. That is smaller particles than any filter can remove. In the photos above you can see the centrifugal cleaner. In the pictures, one is of the rotor bowl full. There is another photo showing what it looks like as the dirt is removed and finally a cleaned out rotor bowl.

Many end users do not realize that their trucks has this feature.

One of the areas on the Moxy articulated trucks that can cost the owner a lot of cash in a hurry is the turning ring and the tandem bearings. Some Moxy dealers will suggest the end user purchase the complete turning ring bearing be replaced. This ring generally runs in the neighbor hood of $7,000. The tandem bearings and turning rings can be repaired for a fraction of that amount. Check out the next page to get answers on this problem.
